Soft landing — 52 Cards Project #17

#17 Soft Landing — 52 Card Project, ink and copic markers on bristol paper, 4”x6”

This week for my 52 Cards Project I knew my theme immediately. Having come home from a trip to Mexico Sunday, I was surprised to find that I experienced an uncommonly soft landing as I eased back to home life. This is not normally true when I go away as I’ve mentioned before, and from what I understand most people also have difficulty transitioning home from vacation.

So from that standpoint, it was an unusual week and the theme idea was easy.

But then, I struggled with coming up with the right image. I considered birds and planes and parachutes. I even tried to draw a figure landing in a ball pit—remember those? My daughters used to love those indoor playgrounds filled with tubes to crawl through, ladders to climb and slides to plunge down into huge vats of plastic balls…

But I digress. I wasn’t happy any of my rough sketches. None of those ideas worked. Finally, the one image that remained was a feather. Which became a pile of feathers (a nest? Home?) to softly land into.

I used a few photo references to get my figure right, and I pulled out my own collection of feathers to help me draw those. I had fun using my copic markers with the ink this week for color instead of watercolors, too.

All in all, a very good week.
